The environmental benefits of replacing petroleum products with bio-based substitutes are clear: they could sequester carbon dioxide, put less burden on landfills and, in some cases, even break down faster. But, bioplastics currently make up less than one percent of the U.S. plastics market. So, while the industry is excited about the potential, there are practical challenges yet to address.

The Reusable Packaging Association (RPA) is hosting a larger and more comprehensive Reusable Packaging Pavilion at PACK EXPO in Las Vegas Sept. 26 – 28.
Working with RPA member IPL, Inc., (the source of funding for this five-year, $335,000 study) researchers at USF Polytechnic are currently designing the prototype for the new RPC. IPL manufactures plastics and is producing the RPCs being used in this study.

Two primary drivers have been identified by a Pira Intl. poll for sustainable packaging development, and both start with the consumers. During a recent poll of a survey of key players across the global packaging value chain, Pira Intl. found that an overwhelming 79 percent of respondents said that consumer awareness of environmental issues and new material developments are the most important drivers in the development of sustainable packaging, as growth drivers. The growth drivers’ specific terminology used in the poll was ‘Increased exposure of consumers to environmental issues’ and ‘Advances in materials technology.”
